RP question

I know full well that game-mechanically the reason for the "job" is to help limit terms but I have some RP concerns/thoughts about it. If as a higher level hero, without insane chip farming I can easilly make 5k chips a day (I make significantly more just selling skulls and claws from leveling in the pit)... why do I need a crappy dayjob? While of course there is not hard and fast idea of how chips equate to real money we have a few clues. Expensive coffee is 12 chips and a used luxury car that I "just know you're not going to get a good deal" on is 3k... how much can rent, bills and food and such be? Does my character keep his dayjob as a cover ID, to launder my chips? That sounds less than ideal and implausible... if I were able to throw chips from adventuring into my bills I could spend my days sleeping and then fight all night long.
I'm not actually proposing any real gameplay changes (though perhaps "retired from day job" could be a higher level quest or retcon alternative or something)... just wanted to know what other people's thoughts on this are?

I wondered something along these lines. Maybe 'chips' is the currency in the Hero world - the world away from work. I dunno. I do like the idea of a day job - adds an element of reality.

Chips are a shadow currency. Money is still a real currency in the day world. Also, your crappy day job pays off the rent and bills.

your employer gets you an awesome dental plan?

While you can't discount the awesome dental plan, there's also tax issues. I mean, it's a lot easier just to keep the chips on the down low, and only tell the IRS about the chips from your day job.

yes. though you're a nighttime vigilante, during day you also commit tax fraud

This is a rumor that just won't die. Perhaps because it was started by a mod, and it's repeated entirely by mods. But it still ain't true. It's a dark and dystopian future where the casinos run everything, and chips are the only currency. Really.
Regarding the original question: it's been asked quite a few times, and I generally reply I do want to have a way to quit the day job, just haven't found a good way to work it in to the game yet. In the meantime, it's just not really an issue having Fraydays be the days with extra turns.

If Captain Guy has a million chips and flaunts it with slick cars and top-of-the-line equipment (not that you can actually buy any of the best equipment...), nobody cares. After all, Captain Guy is just some random hero, and it doesn't matter where his apparent fortune comes from. He's tax-exempt, because he has no official identity.
Now, if Captain Guy's alter ego suddenly retires and starts spending like a madman, that will raise questions he'd rather not answer. Besides, being a full-time hero takes away the ability of the hero to relate to everyday people. How do you know you're really making the world a better place unless you spend some time in the real world as a real person?

To be fair, I was just trying to come up with narrative justification. I didn't expect it to be taken as gospel...

Oh, that's REALLY weird. I could've sworn that you (Ryme) said it. Huh.

I thought this, as well.
Also, it seems the forum search only goes back a little bit.
Also, also, found it anyway.
It is Cris' fault.

The money from your job covers rent/bills/etc.

But since chips aren't money, it'd be illegal. And you're too much of a hero to be illegal.

No, those are two different explanations, I think. Chips might? be associated with thugs, thus no one wants to deal with you.

No. Chips are the accepted currency. People wouldn't turn you down >.>

Ohhhh weird, somehow I missed that.
Then there really isn't an explanation for Socket's question, no?

The answer is the one I gave earlier in this very thread:
Regarding the original question: it's been asked quite a few times, and I generally reply I do want to have a way to quit the day job, just haven't found a good way to work it in to the game yet. In the meantime, it's just not really an issue having Fraydays be the days with extra turns.

Since I started the ball roling I figured I'd chime back in... My thought on this is that there is a quest/option to retire from you're dayjob and "come out of the closet" so to speak to the world about you're hero status, perhaps involving Randol doing some type of deputizing of you so you're not commiting a crime by beating up criminals vigilante style. Your identity remains somewhat secret like an undercover cop, ie the government knows about it, but you're allowed to hide yourself more than most.
What you get is more turns, what you lose is chips and some freedom. You need to pay taxes on all income and you need to pay for rent and bills (the upside of this could be you can buy a really expensive house with cool stuff to get rollover bonuses and other passive buffs at your hideout). You also are under more official scrutiny... I'm not sure what the best mechanical way to do it is but my inspiration is various comics I remember reading where the heroes have tried to live "legit" lives (usually have a great struggle to do so)... those with better memories/knowledge of the genre please chip in!

How about you can't quit your day job until after you can afford and know how to build a new super secret hero hideout?
Then your secret identity is less of a problem since your hideout doesn't also double as your garage.
