Is one's class for their original continuity meaningless? It really seems that way to me, especially with the advent of retcon.
Once you retcon, you get NOTHING from it. Not even a permanent skill.
What game-meaning is there for one's initial choice of class?
(I am pondering an alt, but it really seems to me that whatever class I choose to be first has zero bearing on anything.)

You, um, get to play that class?
Assuming most new characters are also new players, and unfamiliar with the game, sometimes it's nice not to have too much weight put on decisions you have to make before you've got the knowledge to make them.
Also, it's totally a line in your retcon history, so don't mess that up or it'll shame you forever.
