Hmmm... If I had to rank from hardest to easiest:

Gadgeteer
Elementalist
Psion
Naturalist

Psion and elementalist are kinda close to eachother... Not having chips to heal is common to most classes, but psion and gadgeteer have some early healing skills, naturalist has a passive healing in combat skill, and elementalists have the best healing skill in the game but it's late level. Also, you shouldn't be spending time resting that often. If the area is too difficult, you need to get better equipment or go somewhere that's easier to level up. You may want to spend some time in the casino to build up some chips to heal with, as it can save you a lot of time.

I spend a ton of time resting, myself, but I'm really quite bad at games

Satan's right that it's easy to over-extend yourself. If you find yourself resting as much as me, you might need a change in strategy or location.

Interestingly, I always found Gadgeteer way easier than Elemental and Psion. Some of it depends on playstyle.

That might do it :)

It really is all just playstyle. I did all of my early runs as an Elementalist in Maso and loved it. Ice Bolt is my best friend, and Proper Hydration makes the world a shiny place. Low chips are hard, but there are a few tricks to get you through so you don't have any problems. If you do another Elem run pm me and I can send you a rough guide.

Also, the game knows that you want a full day to deal with the Mick. It also knows, if you have Villains on, that you when you clicked on the Mick's room, you really just wanted to fight Kookoo the Klown.
